Table Tennis at Maynooth University – It’s more than a sport!

Maynooth University has a vibrant campus life, with various student clubs and societies providing multiple opportunities for students. These clubs cover academics, sports, culture, arts, health, and anything else that a student needs. Each year, the clubs and societies expand based on the interests of the new students. Of all these, I joined the Table tennis club because I have always been interested in this super exciting sport.

This is one of the most rewarding decisions I have made so far at Maynooth University. Due to this, I have been participating in the events regularly engaging in a kind of physical activity, making new friends internationally, and expanding connections.

Role of Clubs and Societies
Clubs and societies are significantly important for international students. They offer a variety of paths for students to pursue their interests outside of academics, international exposure to, and bond with people of common interests. This will give you a sense of belonging to a community and forge lasting friendships. Students from different backgrounds make up one bright community united by their love for the activity. Some of the closest friendships were formed during the discussions and interactions at clubs and societies.
For me, Sports clubs are a great way to stay active and compensate not only for sedentary work during a day of lectures and assignments but also to relax. The university is very inclusive, so whether you are a seasoned athlete or a curious beginner, you’ll always feel welcome.

Why Table Tennis?
Table tennis may seem somewhat uncomplicated, but it is a great deal more than hitting a small white ball back and forth across a table. It provides improved reflexes, strengthens the eye-to-hand coordination of players, and involves mental premeditation. With membership open to all playing abilities, the Table Tennis Club in Maynooth caters to all levels of skill, from beginners up through advanced players.
I always enjoyed playing table tennis, but here in Maynooth it is on a completely different level playing with mainly Chinese friends. They are amazing, smashing the racket and spinning the ball. The excitement is always high whether it is with training, during casual matches, or competitive tournaments.
The social aspect is not constrained to the table. For instance, the club organizes events such as group dinners, outings, and friendly tournaments with other universities. Through such activities, you really get a chance to reach a deeper level of others and make long-lasting memories thanks to these activities.

Getting Involved
If you are considering joining a club or society within Maynooth, just go for it!
Table Tennis Club has to be one of those perfect blends when it comes to keeping active, being social, and having lots of fun. You don’t have to be an expert in this, but a good enthusiastic person, and that goes a lot of the way when you look to learn! signing up for a club is really easy. There is a Clubs and Societies Fair that takes place at the beginning of the semester, and you can register there by getting in touch with members. You could do this even after the fair through the university web page or by application.

Overall, for me, university life is not just about the academic side but also about exploring my passions and building new experiences. Whether it is a future or present student in Maynooth, never be afraid to try new things concerning clubs and societies. Also, if fast reflexes, game tactics, and tons of fun are among the many things that keep you ticking, then make your way down to Table Tennis Club.
