From Vietnam to Ireland: A short love story with Maynooth University

A Leap of Faith: Why Ireland?

Some love stories are written in the stars, and mine certainly feel that way. But first, let me briefly introduce myself and walk you through my love story. My name is Duyen (or you can call me Eunice), a Vietnamese girl who found her heart captured by the emerald isle. Like a serendipitous meeting, Ireland came into my life at the perfect time, and Maynooth University became a special one in my academic romance. Today, I’m pursuing a master’s degree in International Development (ID) under the GOI-IES Scholarship, and this journey has been nothing short of magical.

Falling in Love with Maynooth

Every love story has a defining moment, and for me, it was discovering Maynooth University. Its student-centered teaching model, innovative curriculum, dedicated professors, and tranquil campus atmosphere felt like a perfect match. My chosen major in International Development at Maynooth University suits my interests in education development and international cooperation well. Plus, the one-year program in International Development offers an ideal balance of depth and efficiency, much like a partner who knows exactly how to challenge and support you. Therefore, despite receiving numerous offers and scholarships from other universities and countries, I have chosen to pursue my academic journey at Maynooth University.

Ireland itself was the backdrop to this romance. The charm of its rolling green hills, warm-hearted people, and traditional music created an irresistible pull. In short, choosing Maynooth University, broadly Ireland, felt like finding a partner who understood my ambitions and dreams – a true meeting of minds and hearts.

The Road to Ireland: A Determined Beginning

Like any meaningful relationship, the path to Ireland required courage and commitment. My journey began with self-reflection, as I sought to understand what I truly wanted. After graduating in International Relations and gaining work experience, I realized my passion lay elsewhere. Education and international cooperation had always been my guiding stars, and International Development became my new north.

Thus, for me, the scholarship application process was a testament to devotion. Crafting a compelling narrative for the selection committee felt like writing love letters to Ireland, pouring my hopes and dreams into every word. I was determined to prove my qualifications and suitability as a strong candidate. The process was daunting, requiring at least half a year of dedicated preparation, but ultimately deeply rewarding. I managed to authentically express myself, and in response, Ireland seemed to open its arms to me.

The Struggles and Sweet Victories

Adjusting to life in a foreign land was both thrilling and challenging. Finding housing, navigating assignments, and settling into a new culture felt like hurdles in a race toward a brighter future. Yet, these moments of struggle were softened by the kindness of strangers and the camaraderie of newfound friends.

Besides, the Vietnamese community in Maynooth is small but mighty. With only five of us, we’ve become a close-knit family. Together, we’ve celebrated traditions and created memories that have made Ireland feel like our second home.

Although I long for the authentic tastes of home, I find joy in creatively expressing my Vietnamese cuisine through my cooking here. Hence, to mark the beginning of 2025, I’ve created an Instagram account to showcase my culinary creations. You can visit my account here

A Heartfelt Thank You and Final Thoughts

As I reflect on this journey, I’m filled with gratitude. Ireland has not only given me a worldwide qualified education but also a sense of belonging and purpose. Maynooth University has been more than a place of learning; it has been a special part of my personal and academic growth.

To anyone considering studying abroad, my advice is: Follow your heart. Trust that the right opportunity will find you. Embrace the challenges with an open mind. Your journey might just turn into a love story – one that you’ll cherish forever, just as I cherish mine with Ireland and Maynooth University.
