My Journey as an MSc. Business Analytics Student at Maynooth University

Why I Chose the MSc Business Analytics Program

As a prospective student with 6 years of professional experience as a Market Researcher and Consultant in India, I wanted to pursue a Master’s in Business Analytics. I chose this course as it aligns with my career prospects and can guide me into a business consultant or a business analyst role in the future. The MSc Business Analytics course falls under the School of Business Department at Maynooth University and I’m glad that the department has taken full responsibility for aligning the course from a business requirements perspective which I was looking for.

Based on my experiences with the course in the first semester, I can say that I have made the right decision in choosing this course at Maynooth University. The course not only focuses on modules that the industry is looking for but also on modules that help you as a person with or without career plans. Also, the core modules in the course provide you with real-world problems for the projects which are interesting.

Adapting to a New Academic Culture

Coming from India where the academics are more theoretical and exam-based with less focus on self-learning was challenging as the teaching style and academics are quite different. Grading in the Business Analytics course at the university is completely based on continuous assessment. The total grade for each module is subdivided into multiple assignments that include both group as well as individual projects. This allows students to engage in group projects and improve their team-building skills and stronger communication skills. Also, each module expects students to self-learn concepts with lectures focussing only on the key and required information that can guide students.

Lecture Structure & Industry Exposure in the Business Analytics Program

The lectures for each module in the School of Business department courses are designed for a limited number of days (for example – four lectures for each module in the Business Analytics course and just 4 to 6 lecture days in a month) with classes starting at 9 AM and going till 6 PM with few intermediate breaks in between. It is because the module expects students to self-learn and there is enough time for doing the same. This is also helpful for students who work part-time, as you will be available for multiple days in a week which offers an advantage over others in securing a job. Despite all these benefits, it requires substantial focus to grasp everything from a long lecture. However, professors understand this, and they plan the day such that there are enough group activities and breaks that energize you to stay focused in the lectures.

The department also focuses on areas to improve the student’s readiness to the job market through the guest lectures from industry professionals. This allows students to directly interact with individuals working in Ireland and understand the requirements to stay in the competitive job market. Additionally, this helps in expanding the network in the country which is crucial to gain advantage while applying for jobs. If you are looking for a major in any business management field, I would highly recommend Maynooth University’s School of Business department.
