Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone: My Global Changemakers Journey

by Leah Deegan

The Global Changemakers Programme was one of the best experiences I have ever had. There was a wide range of workshops within this programme, covering topics such as emotions, interculturality, design, and digital communication. All of the workshops were so different, and I learned many new skills, gained valuable knowledge, and developed different perspectives that opened my mind to the world.

One of my favourite aspects of the Global Changemakers Programme was the group-based workshops, such as the Design Meets Science workshop. This workshop was amazing because we got to design our own products to address real issues in society. It was such a fun experience as we worked together to develop ideas and create innovative solutions.

Another one of my favourite experiences was the dance workshop. This workshop was completely outside of my comfort zone, but it allowed me to grow and take part in something I probably never would have tried on my own. The aim of this workshop was to find ways to make society more inclusive. Through group discussions, we came up with ideas and resources that I would never have thought of myself.

I believe this is why the programme is so valuable, as it encourages you to learn new things, consider different viewpoints, and think about issues from a different perspective.

The Global Changemakers Programme challenged me as a person because, before attending, I struggled with presenting information and speaking in front of a class. However, by the end of the programme, I was confidently speaking up and contributing to group discussions. This is something I never thought I would be able to do in such a short period of time. I grew significantly as a person throughout the programme.

I think one of the most special things about this programme is that I made so many new friends. The group got along so well, and the staff were unbelievably kind and supportive. It truly was a trip of a lifetime.

I did not know what to expect when I applied, but I knew that I wanted to challenge myself and experience something new. The Global Changemakers Programme exceeded all my expectations in the most wonderful way. Travelling to Lyon with the university was an amazing experience. Exploring the city was wonderful, and we were made to feel incredibly welcome by everyone at Université de Lyon.

My recommendation to future students who are considering taking part in the Global Changemakers Programme would be simple: apply. It was one of the best things I have ever done. The programme helped me grow as a person and made me feel more connected to Maynooth University through the friendships I formed.

My advice would be to embrace every opportunity and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Having the chance to travel abroad with Maynooth University is a fantastic opportunity and a real privilege. The workshops, the people you meet, and the experiences you gain make it something you will never forget. It is an opportunity that is simply too good to pass up.
