Ireland is an incredible destination for studying abroad. Whether you’re considering a semester-long exchange program or pursuing a full degree, choosing the right university can feel overwhelming with so many options available. For me, Maynooth University stands out as a clear winner. Here are my top five reasons why you should consider it too.

Having grown up in a bustling city, I wanted a change—somewhere tranquil but not isolated, where nature and community coexist. The university’s beautiful, green campus (proudly a Green Campus Flag recipient) offers just that. The town itself is lively yet peaceful, fostering a sense of belonging among its large student population. It’s the perfect balance between serene surroundings and a dynamic university experience. 

2. A Globally Recognised Institution 

Maynooth University is one of the four constituent universities of the National University of Ireland and is ranked among the top 90 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024. As a research-led institution, it embraces innovation while staying rooted in its rich academic history. For me, as a psychology student, the focus on research was especially appealing. Psychology is still a young science with much to explore, and Maynooth’s dedication to research represents the kind of progress that drives meaningful discoveries. 

3. A Welcoming and Student-Friendly Atmosphere 

From the moment I began my application process, I felt welcomed. The student ambassadors, support staff, and faculty members were always quick to respond, offering guidance with kindness and patience. This support gave me confidence in my decision to choose Maynooth. Upon arrival, the friendliness extended further. The Student Union’s Information Centre provided helpful resources like checklists for living in Ireland, tips for those visiting the country for the first time, and locals were (and still are!) equally warm and accommodating. 

4. Excellent Support Services 

Maynooth University excels in providing robust support systems for its students. Some highlights include: 

• The Writing Support Centre: A walk-in space where students can receive one-on-one guidance on essays, reports, or any writing-related assignments.  

• The Math Support Centre: This non-judgmental environment allows students to work on math assignments with on-hand tutors ready to assist. For me and many of my classmates, it was a lifesaver, making even the most daunting tasks manageable. 

• Counselling and Well-being Services: From academic challenges to personal struggles, there’s always someone available to help.  

These resources are free, accessible, and designed to ensure that no student feels lost. 

5. A Thriving Student Union 

Maynooth Students’ Union (MSU) is the heart of the student community. It goes beyond raising student concerns—it fosters connection and growth. Whether advocating for student needs, organising activities, or hosting wellness events, MSU ensures students thrive socially, culturally, and academically. 

Some standout initiatives include: 

• De-stress Week: Activities like painting, crochet, and tea mornings help students relax during exam periods. 

• Student Pantry: A discreet service offering essential non-perishable food items to students facing financial difficulties. 

• Therapy Dogs: A crowd favourite that brings joy and calm during high-stress times. 

MSU’s approachability and commitment to making student life better are what make it exceptional. 

Reflecting on My Experience 

As I begin my second semester of my second year at Maynooth University, I can confidently say that choosing to study here has been one of the best decisions of my life. The peaceful environment, vibrant community, and rich culture have created a well-rounded and enriching experience. With exceptional support systems and countless opportunities for growth, I’ve felt both challenged and supported on my academic journey.
